Fire Procedure

The Robinson Institute is built of stone and is a substantial builing.During the summer and Autumn of 2004 a storage extension was built and the remainder of the building was completely refurbished including re-wiring, complete new central heating and boiler, new kitchen including calor gas cooker, new toilets and re-roofed.

There are 11 exit lights above all exit doors and the toilet/cloakrooms immediately to the left and right with inner ENTRANCE/EXIT doors to the main hall

In the main hall there are double emergency EXIT doors at one side.

In the new store room there is a door with metal steps to a grassed area. During the refurbishment, Scarborough Council building inspector was involved, recommending fire safety features were incorporated in the building work in all parts of the hall. Following the refurbishment, two fire officers from Scarborough and a reprensentive from the licensing department of Scarborough Council visited the hall and confirmed that Entrance/Exit doors were more than adequate for the hall to be evacuated in the time recommended for an emergency evacuation and other safety was in place.

In the entrance to the Institute and the toilets there is no inflammable material. In the main hall all the curtains are fire retardant as is the material on the chairs. The kitchen the calor gas cooker has the gas cylinders outside, fitted with appropriate valves, there is a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket near by Store room very little combustible material in the store room. Central Heating boiler the boiler is in the cellar and has a foam extinguisher near by. Fire Extingushers,Foam spray in the entrance, Water extinguisher in the hall, Powder extinguisher in the kitchen, Foam extinguisher in Caretakers cottage on steps to cellar.

The building is fitted with a fire alarm system with heat detectors in the kitchen and smoke detectors in the hall and entrance. There is a NO SMOKING policy through out the hall Scarborough Borough Council have given an occupancy figure of 176. There are very few times when 176 people are on the premises. There will be a number of times when there will be around 100 people on the premises. Most of the time the hall is used for the regular, smaller specialised groups.


In the event of fire:

GET EVERY ONE OUT OF THE PREMISES,
EACH OF THE EXIT DOORS GO OUT TO OPEN GROUND
CALL THE FIRE SEVICE
THEN EVALUATEE THE POSSIBLE USE OF A FIRE EXTINGUISHER


The hall is used mainly by local people who are familiar with the layout of the hall.

On all occasions someone has to be familiar with evacuation procedures.
